Toxicity of metals has received considerable attention in recent years because industrial effluents frequently contain metals that can have adverse effects on human health and the environment [1]. Saffron is the commercial name of the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L. flowers. It is used both as a spice in food sand as a drug in traditional medicine. In food, saffron performs the functions of a spice, adding its faint, delicate aroma, pleasing flavor, and magnificent yellow color. In Greek traditional medicine, a small quantity of saffron is thought to regulate menstruation and help with conception. Saffron is the main constituent of saitocrocin, a tincture medicine mixture used in Japanese traditional medicine. It is assumed that saffron enhances brain activity. In addition, the biological activity of saffron as a natural preventing substance in anticancer research is in development [2]. Saffron is the most expensive spice widely used for its aroma and coloring properties. It has been used as a sedative and analgesic in traditional medicinal preparations and has recently been shown to have distinct anticancer activities [3]. In this work we have investigated the potential of saffron for complex formation with thallium (I). In the first we have adsorbed saffron onto XAD-4 Amberlite resin and then we passed the sample solution contains of Tl+ trough it. We found that Tl+ can be remained on the modified resin in the pH range of 3.5-7.5. For this work we have examined the solution before and after passing through XAD-4 resins that modified with saffron and concentration of Tl+ were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and we found concentration of Tl+ is very lower in the passed solution than the first solution. We compared these results with a XAD-4 resin that unmodified therefore saffron can be complexed with Tl+ in the pH range of 3.5-7.5. In this work we found each gram of saffron can be complexed with 3.75 mg of Tl+. After preliminary experimental we have investigated potential of saffron for removal of Tl+ from rate body. We have selected two groups of rate, for the first group (blank group) we added 0.2 mg of Tl+ in the food of rate by day and for the second group we have added 0.2 mg of Tl+ and 200 mg of the saffron in the food of the second group by day. Then, after past of 20 days we killed the rates and then we have determined the concentration of Tl+ in the blood the rates by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The determination of these metals that showed the concentration of these metals was very low in second group than blank group. Therefore saffron can be used for removal of Tl+ from biological body.
